Mark Higgins has led this rally from stage 2 onwards - Tapio Laukkanen led after stage 1, but crashed the VW Golf out on stage 2.  Other major retirements included the 2 Peugeots of Justin Dale (engine) and David Higgins (accident).  Juuso Pykalisto's Ford Puma crashed within sight of the start of stage 3 and Swedish driver Per Johansson stopped in stage 5 when he had the Saab up to 10th place. 

Overnight class leaders include - Jamie Cook from Michael White (both in N1 Skodas): Steve Head in the Team Penquin Proton leads class 2 from Martin Newcombe. Nik Skelton was in front but his Compact lost 7 minutes with rear suspension damage in stage 6.  Newcombe was struggling to get to overnight service, his Civic's pulley wheel gone and no charge from the alternator.  Simon Thomas/Liz Jordan lead cl.3 from Charlie Exton/Suzanne Emiliani in the Honda Integra. Charlie had some brake problems and also lost some time catching an Astra in stage 5 and 6. Young Italian Marco Veroni is 4th in that class behind Ernie Graham, Veroni struggling with a sick engine, but saying "While there is life I will go on, I really want to finish".  Mark Perrott leads gpn from Marko Ipatti from Mike Brown. Gary Furneaux leads cl.6 from Sarah Murray (both in Micras) - Sarah just 3s behind, and has lost a lot of time with a puncture, which she stopped to change. Furneaux incurred road penalties, through inexperience on their first international rally.

Mats Andersson leads class 6 from Charlie Jukes, Charlie driving his heart out. Niall McShea now 3rd in class and 16th overall following his most recent mechanical problem.

In the PANAROUND/MINTEX 2000 section of the rally - Glyn Jones won by 40s from Steve Petch, with Dave Weston 3rd. Jack Cooke won his class in a Civic and Charles Armstrong clinched his category by 3s from Bob Francis. In the Lex Army Land Rover Challenge - Cpl. Mark Simmons has 2mins advantage over Lbdr Jim Clark with Cpl Mark Saunders 3rd. More in the morning..BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON
