The bombshell from stage 2, Dyfi, is that current Mobil 1 British Champion, Tapio Laukkanen, has stuck his Volkswagen Golf off the road on a slow hairpin left after a very fast downhill descent.  Also departed the fray is Justin Dale, his Peugeot 106 Super Gti having a mechanical problem, to add to the team's woes following David Higgins' accident on stage 1.

It is a Vauxhall 1-2 then, with both Astra drivers, Mark Higgins and Neil Wearden, reporting no major dramas. Mark Perrott in 3rd place is also going like a train, Mark's only worry being stones rattling around the gear change protective plating.  Mats Andersson in the Proton had a tiny brake problem earlier on but is now all OK, and indications are that he may be leading the super 1600 division. It's early days yet and there are still times coming in, but the two Peugeots are gone and Niall McShea has had problems, not the least of which resulted in the Saxo arriving in here to service with a flat wheel.

Marko Ipatti still has his brake problems. Jonny Milner set a good time on stage 2 but lost over 7 mins. in stage 1 when an earth to the engine management system did not earth some 4 miles from stage finish.  Pykalisto is still getting used to the 2 wheel drive Ford Puma after years in 4 wd group N cars, and is thoroughly enjoying the little Ford.  Mike Brown lost a few seconds behind McShea's ailing, but still sideways, Saxo. Gavin Cox had a puncture near the end of stage 2 and joked "It was like driving a Mk2 Escort".  Dave Wood tells us he followed Neil Simpson's turbo blown Lancer for 4 miles in stage 1 and it cost him some time. Simpson did not get out of the stage. Swedish visitor Johan Kressner with Gunnar Barth co driving feels his tyres were just too narrow for the fast stages. Fellow Swede Per Johansson is going reasonably well in the Saab, it is Per's first visit to the Welsh forests. Richard Davis says he is pretty rusty and is also having long brake pedal troubles. Nik Elsmore is still getting used to gpN 4 wheel drive performance. Mark Lawn lost nearly a minute on stage 1 with fuel surge problems. Julian Reynolds reckons his Toyota engine is not pulling right.

Some further times - Mats Andersson 33.12.7: Pinker 33.54.1: Milner 39.23.0: Pykalisto 32.50.9: Lawn 34.25.1: Wood 33.00.0: Kressner 32.41.8: Davies 33.13.0: Elsmore 32.52.8: Reynolds 32.56.7: Johansson 32.51.9;  More news later..BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON
