The Dyfnant stage, the final test on this first day of the Vauxhall Rally of Wales, broughtno significant change to the leaderboard. Once again Mark Higgins was fastest, with Neil Wearden 2nd fastest and Mark Perrott 3rd. Mark Higgins commented "It was a bit of a scrappy stage for me, it was such a contrast after Gartheiniog to have the brakes working so well, it was hard to adjust".  Wearden said "That was one of our best stages, I kept it tidier and straighter, I was getting too sideways earlier on".  Co-driver Trevor Agnew added "We were getting some dust from Mark's car and the low sun made the visibility a bit difficult, but it was OK, we're now 22.6 seconds behind Mark Perrott, and hopefully we can pull that back tomorrow".  As for Mark Perrott, doing such a fantastic job today, he commented "No great pressure, really enjoyed the day and the car was perfect".

Marko Ipatti in 4th place is going to change the turbo on his Lancer at Wrexham service, as he feels the car is not going the way it should. Mike Brown in 5th set a 3rd equal fastest time in stage 6, so he is going into the overnight halt a reasonably happy man.  Jarmo Kytolehto has had a mixed day, the steering column was coming loose in stage 6 and he also finished the stage with a lot of oil smoke. The Finnish driver's problems during the day have ranged from an errant exhaust causing the floor of the car to smoke, to 2 punctures and having to open the windows which then let in clouds of dust.

Mats Andersson has regained the lead of the Super 1600 category - Mats telling us he had a good stage 6 despite some brake fade, while his rival Niall McShea was forced to slow considerably with a steering problem, and lost well over a minute.  McShea also cost Gavin Cox quite a few seconds as he got stuck behind the struggling Saxo.

Jonny Milner has retired his Celica after an oil fire burned through the wiring loom.  His team mate Julian Reynolds discovered a spark plug had gone down, and that was the cause of the earlier power loss.  Stuart Egglestone finished the day with quite a good time, but basically it wasn't clicking for the Cumbrian today, he is well off colour after suffering from a very upset stomach all week.  Dave Wood had engine problems with his Subaru after Dyfi, was changing the box at Dolgellau, and is now showing 3mins penalty, which we presume is related. Natalie Barrett is the leading lady in 21st overall and reports no problems. PANAROUND/MINTEX - Glyn Jones still has a narrow lead over Steve Petch with 1 stage remaining. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON
