Mark Higgins finished stage 3, Dyfnant, and remarked "The stage was quite abrasive but a very good surface, it went well for us".  Mark's Vauxhall was fastest of the early runers on a time of 14.25.7, his Astra team mate Wearden on 14.34.7, and telling us "We were suffering a bit with dust from Mark".  Kytolehto seemed to have a rear puncture which affected his time. Jonny Milner reported his Celica going really well and the earlier stoppage still a bit of a mystery. Marko Ipatti had softer brake pads fitted for stage 3 and was a lot happier with his performance.

Finnish driver Juuso Pykalisto has unfortunately put the little Ford Puma off the road on that third stage - ironic really when he was saying just how much he was enjoying the car, and getting back into the swing of front wheel drive. Mike Brown's Lancer was delayed getting past the stricken Puma. Stuart Egglestone lost a few seconds when he made a mess of a hairpin, otherwise OK. The flying Perrott reports no problems.

David Wright/Rick Forster have crashed their lovely new Corsa off the road in Dyfi. Apparently it was a fast right hander, the car just touched the culvert, snapped sideways, broke away crashing over tree stumps. Crew OK, car obviously damaged.  First time vistor Marco Veroni from Italy seems to be having a real ball in his Astra, but his co-driver Luca Giannecchini is having a spot of bother with the timing! It's a bit different in Italy.

In the Panaround section of the rally, which also includes the Mintex 2000 Championship, Glyn Jones leads after the first 2 stages, with a 9s advantage over Steve Petch. Robert Woodside in the Legacy was 3rd after the first stage but still no sign of him here at service after SS2. Dave Weston was 4th, Phil Morgan 5th and Dave Humphreys 6th.  Glyn Jones reckons he had a slightly wrong tyre choice, but otherwise everything is going well.  Petch reported an oil leak before the start of the rally, which has been sorted. Woodside had his share of dramas with the Legacy, the scrutineers pronouncing that the bag fuel tank was over the statutory 5 years old, and had overstayed it's welcome, which entailed a late night trip by engineer Robbie McGurk to get a replacement from Bill Gwynn.

In the Lex Army Land Rover Challenge part of the rally, Mark Simmons/Jason Webster made a good start, 37s faster than Jim Clark/Simon Nock with Nick Harvey/Mark Burton 3rd - all 6 Landrovers still going. More later.BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON (with thanks to Andrew Haill)
