Woodland Furniture Northern Ireland Championship leader, Robin
Phillips and Mike Gibson arrived at the end of the first stage
Camlough, declaring "that was dead on, the stage is perfect"
Robin right on the pace setting fastest time. Wesley Patterson
stopped the clocks just one second down in his Sierra Cosworth,
with Denis Biggerstaff in his Metro 6R4 a further one second
behind Patterson, Denis saying everything was okay.
Local men Sean McArdle and Damien Garvey in their Taranto de
Pol Celica were running at number 3 on the road, but have reportedly
slid off up a bank in Camlough, delaying some of the following
drivers as they tried to squeeze through what little gap was
left, this included David Armstrong who felt he lost about five
seconds.
Gary White experienced some brake problems on his Escort, while
the two wheel drive men Glen Allen and Camillus Bradley both
reported no problems while Norman Armstrong in his Escort arrived
at the end of the stage beaming from ear to ear, having really
enjoyed that first stage. Just off the leaderboard Richard
Hogg leads GpN in his Lancer Richard saying he found it a bit
slippy, setting a time of 2.29 while Raymond Johnston did 2.32
and Raymond Mason in the ex-Barratts Impreza did 2.33.
Jim Crozier in his Persona dropped at least 15 seconds with an
off, damaging the front of the car but not to badly.
Non starters this morning included potential front runner Keith
White in his two wheel drive Escort who broke his gear box just
before the start, and Woodland Furniture series sponsor Kieran
Shaw in his Escort Cosworth didn't take the start for an unknown
reason. Other quick times from the first stage include
Alan Nesbitt and David Smith in their Escort G3 who set a time
of 2.27, while Boarder Championship front runner Micky McArdle
in his glorious sounding BMW M3 did 2.30. More News Later
