Eamonn Boland finished this Wexford Rally in style with another
fastest time, and of course victory to add to his previous three
wins. Wexford man Eamonn, co driven by Damien Morrissey,
commented at the finish "Very enjoyable rally, the new car
felt really good and we didn't have a bother the whole way through".
For 2nd placed Jon Mercer this was probably one of his best results.
It was his first visit to the Wexford Rally, and he really drove
impeccably throughout, and admitted he learned a lot. Jon was
undoubtedly well assisted by the very experienced Lyn Jenkins
on the pace notes. Steve Fleck's Subaru blew a turbo this morning
but he battled back hard through the afternoon stages to finish
3rd, and keep David Armstrong at bay. David has had problems
all day with his Escort Cosworth's intercom. It was noticeable
that the battery was replaced at service, and on the next stage,
David set joint second fastest time, but then as the intercom
faded, so did his stage times.
Steve Hendy had a small excursion on stage 14 but still managed
5th. Phil Henderson did well to take 6th, his Metro 6R4 not quite
to the specification of the 6R4's in front. Johnny O'Sullivan
was well pleased with his weekend's work and take 7th overall
as well as moving up to 2nd in the South East championship. Jon
Tainton in 8th wins group N. Guy Woodcock in 9th wins Formula
2, class A7 and goes into 3rd overall in the Safety Devices Championship.
Trevor Culbert was 11th and 2nd in class 11A, the class being
won by Tim Ball.
Further down the list - James Travers has won his class in his
Ford Ka and has also won the Triton Showers South East Championship.
Last minute retirements included - Derek Smith and Jimmy Lambert,
each crashing their Escorts on stage 15. We mistakenly
thought that William Carroll had retired earlier when his Escort
Cosworth developed turbo troubles, but he managed to keep it
going and has finished, although outside the leaderboard, his
cause not helped by putting the car in a stage 13 ditch for 4
minutes. John Sheehan takes 2nd in gpN with his Subaru, Nigel
Hickland 3rd in his Lancer. Just outside the leaderboard
is Gareth Lloyd in his Escort, David James, Tim Ball....running
out of space..well done to Pat O'Dowd and all his team for working
so hard. Thanks to all who helped the RallyNews service..including
the results team, Tom Nolan, Cathy, Dougie Hughes..BRIAN &
