**Jimmy Lambert/James Coleman may have a 30s road penalty to
go on to their stage times following the first stage alternator
falling off dramas...
Eamonn Boland continues to set fastest times - through stage
4 he was 28s faster than the next quickest time of Steve Fleck,
while in stage 5, Deerpark, it wasn't quite so pronounced, just
16s for the 10 mile stae, but there the Boland Subaru was suffering
from sticking throttle troubles once again. Eamonn does not seem
too perturbed that he has had to switch off the anti lag system,
but yet the throttle is still sticking open. However, there must
be a little concern for the 3 times Wexford winner.
Steve Fleck tells us that his car is going so much better than
it did on Ravens Rock where he only had 0.5 bar boost - on that
occasion he was so fed up at his poor times that he tells us
that he did not hand in his time cards nor visit the finish...
On his first visit to Wexford, Jon Mercer is doing a superb job.
He was up into 2nd after stage 3 but then his Metro 6R4 tyres
started to lose their edge and Fleck just got his nose in front
on stages 4 and 5. We did have David Armstrong into 4th
after stage 3, but we haven't seen him here at service "in"
control. Perhaps we missed him, but we did hear his blue Escort
Cosworth was parked at the ballroom back up the road after stage
5.
Other stories include...Gareth Lloyd having a small spin in stage
4 when he was over exuberant with his Mk2 Escort's handbrake.
Jimmy Lambert's Escort, which is really flying over the stages,
now has an oil leak, fumes and smoke coming into the car not
helping Jimmy's cause. William Carroll started the day stead,
and has gradully been speeding up, his total now 38.50. Jon Tainton,
despite a small excursion on the first stage which bent one of
his Lancer's track control arms, leads gpN convincingly after
stage 5. John Sheehan has been going well, but reckons
his gpN Subaru just doesn not have the horse power to match the
Lancer. Carlow's John Hennessy picked the wrong tyrs for the
first stage - an intermediate instead of a slick - the car lost
grip and he held John Sheehan up for a few seconds for which
he has since apologised. Pat Laracy in the Ascona had an early
mmisfire which cost some time, now there is an oil leak which
is sending a lubricant mist on to the front screen. Tomas O'Rourke's
Kadett is also suffering an oil leak.
