As can be seen above, Denis Biggerstaff and Robert Woodside were equal fastest on the first stage of this Toshiba Rally, but not so lucky were Trevor Moore and John McKeown.  Moore's Escort Cosworth centre differential scrunched itself on the start line of the stage, Trevor coaxed it through to the finish, but the car wouldn't go up the little rise on to the tarmac road.  End of rally for Trevor.  McKeown arrived at stage finish several minutes late, the driver's door of his Sierra Cosworth missing, gone, testimony to an excursion down one of the Parkmore ditches.  Apart from the draught, John was as cool as a cucumber anyway, and joked "Not a worry hey, we'll get a new door in the scrapyard and get it on at service!"  Wife Mandy who is codriving today, didn't seem very impressed, she is leading the co-driver's section of the Mid Antrim club championship, and the whole idea today was to get to the finish unscathed!

Out at the front of the rally Eamonn Boland remarked about his first trip through the Co. Antrim forests.."Very good, quite slippy, happy to keep it out of the ditch, not a bother!"  McGarrity said "Being cautious".  Denis Biggerstaff told us "Made a few mistakes, slowed early for the hairpin right, but OK".  Robin Philips commented "Just alright, the windscreen got very dirty and I couldn't really see".  Robert Woodside told us about his first run in the McKinstry Subaru "I'm still getting used to the traction and the brakes".

Other stories included...George Robinson did not make the start line, he did not want to take his own Escort Cosworth into the forests, so he did a deal to run Kieran Shaw's car (Kieran and his partner Brian McCluskey are busy this weekend getting a new computer system into KBB Doors factory).  However, Kieran's car could not make the start line because of a mechanical problem.  Gary White's Escort Cosworth finished that first stage with smoke wisping from under the bonnet. Another change to entry is that David Patterson/Martin Johnston have switched their Maurice Lynn Motors backed Mitsubishi for one of Eugene Donnelly's Escorts at No.40.  Some other times include..Richard Hall 3.50: Maurice Gass in the Millview Fuels Celica 3.51: Glenn Allen in his Mk2 Escort 3.52. Gary White 3.50: Jimmy Logan joked "I'm getting too old for this", and recorded 3.58: More news later. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON
