Denis Biggerstaff has stretched his advantage to 10 seconds despite some minor problems over stages 3, 4 and 5.  His Metro 6R4 blew the exhaust off on stage three and they stalled just before the control into stage four and were unable to restart the car, only just getting it going in time to check in without incurring penalties, Denis not able to turn the engine off now for fear of it not restarting.

Richard Hogg says he is settling in to his new Escort Cosworth, but both he and co driver Mark Hanna were suprised that they had gone so quickly through stage five but reporting no problems.  Third place man James Gillen was fastest overall on stage 2, following intercom failure for the first two stages, James much happier now he can hear co driver Victor Carruthers.

Championship leader Robin Phillips along with Mike Gibson in their DGM Celica are reporting spins in almost every stage so far, Robin saying "We are feeling a bit rusty, it has been some time since the Sperrins, while most of these guys have been on the loose in Scotland since then".

Glenn Allen and Eugene Donnelly struggled a bit on the uphill sections in stage 5 in their 2 wheel drive Escort but still hold fourth overall, while Richard Hall changed to narrow tyres for SS5 and admits that they really made all the difference and he was third fastest overall in there.

In GpN Raymond Mason reports no problems leading the category and running fifth overall and Fermanagh's Raymond Johnston going well in 13th place, Jim Crozier not far behind on a total of 21.10.

Retirements include Frank Kelly who arrived into service on a trailer while Peter Martin broke a drive shaft at the start of SS2 on some rough stuff, in Formula One we hear provisionally that Hakinen is on poll from Trulli and Schumacher in third.
