Andrew Nesbitt was fastest over this morning's first stage, the 12.19 mile Shandangan test.  The Cross Refrigeration director stopped the clocks on 10.16, Frank Meagher 10.23, Austin McHale 10.38 and Ian Greer 10.46. Kenny McKinstry recorded 10.49. This morning's first stage was always going to be critical, setting the tone for the day. Andrew Nesbitt made no mistake.  He said at the finish line near Macroom "Quite a tight stage, the sunlight was very blinding, but we went well".  When Frank Meagher's "Dance to Tipperary" backed Focus came to a halt the Cloneen man told us "OK, good, a few little errors, didn't know the stage as well as I'd like to".  Taranto de Pol lead driver Ian Greer said "Fell asleep".  While Kenny McKinstry remarked "A great stage but I spun at the first hairpin left, cold tyres".

Other stories included...Niall McShea felt he was running out of brakes. Roy White in the FESP backed Lancer said he had a good run and holds his gpN positin. Liam Davis got caught out badly with the bright sunshine, did not have his sun glasses on.  Tim O'Riordan was another to get unsighted, went adrift on a 100mph easy right, his Sierra causht the grass and had a huge spin. John Sheehan in the gpN Subaru had a spin at the last junction.

Johnny O'Sullivan in the Escort WRC was going very slowly through stage 9, finished the test but lost many minutes with a slipping clutch...
