Although Frank Meagher was fastest through stage 6, Tubrid, he is going to have to go some now to catch West Cork man Donal O'Donovan with just 2 stages remaining.  Through stage 4, Goatenbridge, O'Donovan was fastest on 6.18 with Meagher and Tim McNulty equal 2nd fastest with 6.19.  In stage 5 Lisnamuck, O'Donovan was again fastest with a time of 7.15. Eamonn Boland was 7.16, Frank Meagher 7.17. On stage 6 Frank Meagher recorded 8.35 to Donal O'Donovan's 8.38 with Paul Harris on 8.40.  A rain shower in Tubrid made the roads very slippery for the drivers, almost all of whom were running on dry weather tyres.  In reference to our last RallyNews it has been confirmed that Denis Cronin crashed on stage 4.  Co driver Helen O'Sullivan is reported to be OK, Denis taken to hospital to have a sore neck checked.

Michael Barrable came into service after stage 6 but reckons he is over maximum lateness, a broken wire to the electronic clutch causing a big delay.  Eamonn Boland has had a puncture and a spin. Paul Harris has had some brake troubles. Tommy Graham parked his Escort WRC on a wall very briefly in stage 6.  Tim McNulty was just one of several drivers who found their tyres going off in stae 6. Dominic Loughran is either running very late or has retired after a stage 4 puncture.  Eugene Ferry stopped when his new engine lost a stud and all the water escaped. Gus Kearney retired when his Ford Ka broke a steering rack. John Carroll still leads the Kas after 5 stages, but by just 5s from John O'Dowd with John Travers a further 8 back..tight stuff! George Cullen reckons his Celica is in trouble with a fault in the transmission. Patrick Elliott still leads gpN, Patrick one of several drivers delayed at Cronin's accident. Maurice Gass has had some problems with his Celica's water injection pump. Peter McCullagh dropped a bit of time with a broken driveshaft. Jon Tainton is 2nd in gpN, 22s behind Elliott. George Tracey a further 21 in arrears while Joe McHugh is over a minute back. More news later..BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON (with thanks to Dougie Hughes)
