Paul Harris had a reasonably clear run through the first stage
while many drivers behind reported misted up windscreens, overshoots,
and slides into ditches. Of the early drivers Michael Barrable
seemed to be the worst affected - he had caught up reasonably
close to Tim McNulty's similar Celica in the stage, but with
the streaming wet conditions, spray and mist, when Michael closed
on McNulty he lost his bearings and the car ended up off the
road into a bog. Michael got going very quickly, obviously
it cost a bit of time, but worse news was at the end of the stage
his mechanic found a hole in the radiator. Big Robbie McGurk
gave him 2 tubes of sealer and that has been injected into the
Toyota's cooling system. Hopefully the car can get through stage
2 and into service.
Pete Doughty felt that he was pretty rust when he was doing the
stage, his cause not helped by co driver Tim Sturla feeling very
unwell this morning. Liam McCarthy had a slow time, the
West Cork man not being able to see a thing through his Celica's
windscreen. Anthony O'Halloran was absolutely standing
in his 2 litre Manta through the stage, but caught up with Roy
White's Lancer, again lost visibility and valuable seconds.
As we were leaving that Mt Kidd stage the next car due was Jon
Tainton, but there was no sign of his Lancer....
Roy White had an overshoot and lost a few seconds. Frank O'Mahony
reported a fogged up windscreen. Donie O'Sullivan got held
up by Liam McCarthy. John Moynihan did not get started
the rally, some mix up over scrutineering time, a poor reward
for John on his birthday!
Some further times - Donie O'Sullivan 10.17: Ray Breen 10.37:
Tommy Graham 10.18. More news to follow..BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON |
