Sorrell Hill, stage 10 on this Dunlop Rally of Ireland, provided
a huge upset when Eamonn Boland crashed his NVD backed Subaru
World Rally Car out of the rally. Fifth placed Hugh Dunne
also crashed out to turn the top 10 on it's head. Early reports
are that all crew members are OK. Also missing at the end of
stage 10 was Patrick Elliott. The Cavan man led group N overnight
and was 7th overall in the classification. His Lancer completed
the Tallaght stage with no problems reported, but did not appear
at the start of stage 10 at his correct time. Elliott could be
running late of course, and be stuck behind the blockage on 10.
Austin McHale was 9s faster than Peadar Hurson through the spectator
stage at Tallagh, and then the 2 set equal fastest time through
Sorrel Hill, to leave McHale 31s in arrears, with 7 stages remaining.
Michael Barrable was fastest through the Tallagh stage.
Initial reports were that Eamonn Boland's Subaru had gone on
fire - there is an element of truth in that, there was lots of
smoke and steam from under the bonnet. John Treacy stopped and
gave Eamonn his fire extinguishers, and certainly the conflagration
was contained. Peadar Hurson, McHale, Barrable and John
Treacy also slowed or stopped at the scene of Boland's accident
to make sure he was OK. Peadar Hurson reported at the stage finish
that his Escort Cosworth now has a top end misfire and seems
to be down on power. McHale is moving into territory tht he knows
fairy well, and where he will be able to use the full capacity
of his World Rally Car, so no doubt Austin will be flat out to
try and take the lead before the day is out.
Further news coming in is that Douglas Richardson who was lying
just inside the top 20 overnight, and leading his class,
has retired with mechanical troubles. Just outside the
above leaderboard, Pat White is in 11th and Lloyd Hutchinson
in the Mini, now an astonishing 12th!
Just some of the overnight class leaders include - Brian Corey
in his Sierra leading cl.12. Shaun Gallagher led cl.10 with his
Corolla and Tom & Susan Taafe still lead cl.3 in their Integra.
Brian Flanagan is settling in to his lhd Micra Kit Car and leads
cl.5. In cl.6 Tom Lawless has got ahead of Eugene Meegan. More
to follow: BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON
