Undaunted by his earlier turbo trouble Peadar Hurson set a screamer
of a fastest time through stage 13 and that was through driving
rain which made conditions very difficult. Peadar is still reporting
his Escort Cosworth suffering a high up misfire, so perhaps the
wet conditions alleviated that particular syndrome. McHale
was 6s slower but in truth Austin is under so little pressure
now as regards the lead, that is not having to drive flat out.
Michael Barrable is in much the same situation, in his own window
between first and third and he is quite content to let Hurson
nibble a few seconds here and there. Michael's time was 8.34
- 19s slower than Hurson.
The major change to leaderboard through stage 13 was that Peter
McCullagh's Escort Cosworth stopped with a bang when something
in the transmission seemed to let go. Stage 14, Rock of
Dunamase, did not run this time so the drivers have quite a long
time in service and then the rally should be back on schedule
for the run back to Tallaght.
further stories include - Dominic Loughran's Sierra having a
bad spin and having to be push started in that 13th stage. Pat
White still has intermittent intercom problems. Roy White is
starting to speed up in his Mitsubishi Lancer as he gets more
comfortable with the new car.
Some of the class leaders with 3 stages to go include John Treacy
who is putting up such a fine show in his 2 litre Escort. George
Treacey leads gpN in his Subaru and Dominic Loughran leads cl.13
in his Sierra. Fergal Allen is 2nd in that cl.13, Fergal is finding
his Sierra a real handful on the wet roads but hanging in there
in 11th overall. Douglas Richardson leads cl.15C. Lloyd Hutchinson
was well up there in the Mini and although still going lost a
lot of time when he went off the road in stage 12. Tom Taafe,
co driven by his daughter Susan, leads cl.3. Shaun Gallagher
leads cl.10 in his Civic. Brian Flangan co driven by Ted Gaffney
is in front in cl.5 with the Micra Kit Car. Tom Lawless leads
cl.6, Joe Curran leads cl.7 and Martin Kirwan heads cl.2 from
English visitor Paul Fuchs. In in Belgian Grand Prix at Spa,
Hakkinen nipped ahead of Schumacher to cross the line first,
with Ralf Schumacher 3rd. Coulthard 4th, Button 5th and Frentzen
6th. More news later.BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON..with thanks to
Maurice Nagle & the results team. |
