Peadar Hurson led this Dunlop Rally of Ireland for the first 3 stages but after stage 4 the Warrenpoint man told us "We were off the road briefly, lost a few seconds, it was a fast medium right and we were just too quick into it".  This allowed Eamonn Boland into the lead, the Subaru man admitting to a cautious start but getting well into the groove through stages 3 and 4, Eamonn setting equal fastest with McHale through stage 4.  Austin was fastest on stage 2 and then equal fastest on 3 with Hurson, McHale saying that his intercom packed up a mile or two into that 3rd stage. He then borrowed a unit from John McCluskey who is doing OO duties.  It is still remarkable how Austin has pulled back from almost last after stage 1 right on to the leaderboard. Following his first stage suspension trouble Austin's Corolla WRC is now running one old strut and one new one.

Michael Barrable is finding the handling of his Toyota still a little difficult. Hugh Dunne had a spin in stage 4 which cost a few seconds. Dominic Loughran's Sierra has an oil leak and he's taking it a bit handy.  George Treacy in the gpN Subaru has some throttle sticking problems. John Treacy in the Mk2 Escort is pondering over tyre choice. Sean Keenan reports a broken manifold with his development Corsa.  Roy White is finding his new Lancer "fantastic" but obviously on his first run in the car he is being cautious and wants to get plennty of stage miles done this weekend before the Manx International.  Dave Lynch/Anne Marie Moran report an overshoot at a hairpin and then making a total hash of it.  Andrew Fanning in the new rear wheel Puma is finding his suspension settings all wrong. Max McKillen crashed the Protec Puma on stage 1, blocking the stage for several other competitors.
John Hughes is having some clutch troubles in his Escort. Sean Blake/Elva Rowe are having cylinder head and clutch troubles in their Escort Cosworth. Mark Leathem/Mark Wills clipped a rock on the first sstage, that upset the handling, but they have since settled down and are setting quite good times. Francis Corrigan was another to damage his suspension on SS1 but his Lancer is now running fairly straight again. Just outside the leaderboard - Francis Corrigan 11th: Tom Holton 12th: Mark Leathem 13th: Fergal Allen 14th: Peter McCullagh 15th: Roy White 16th: and a yet lagged Pat White 17th: More news to follow..BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON
