The above times are from the first cars only and there may be some more quick times to come. Robert Barrable/Damien Connolly were fastest over the bleak Carran Hill stage. Robert said at the end of the stage. “Very slippy and greasy in patches”. Daragh O’Riordan’s co driver Tony McDaid echoed Robert’s thoughts and said. “It is slippy and quite gravelly. I think its possible we may be going home early today anyway as Daragh is feeling quite unwell with possibly flu”.
Former National Champion Niall Maguire’s Subaru hove into sight with a front left tyre flapping. Niall reported that he drove for 2 miles on the flat tyre. Remarkably he didn’t lose too much time. Kevin Barrett also lost a few seconds when his Impreza slid into a ditch near the start of the 16.87km stage.
Colm Murphy was the fastest of the conventional Group N cars, 1s up on Garry Jennings. Sam Moffett reported. “Just couldn’t get into it”. John Cairns hasn’t done a rally for quite a while so his 6th fastest time in his older model GpA Subaru was pretty good. Roy White lost some time when a water bottle started to roll around the floor of his MG S200 and got under the pedals. Roy had to almost stop in the stage and take his belts off to extricate the errant container. Sam Smyth finished the stage with 2 of his Escort rims full of mud, testimony to a visit into a ditch.
Frank Kelly said at stage finish. “That was a nightmare, no grip at all”. Damien Gallagher’s Escort is reportedly parked up not far into that first stage. Brian Brogan was a last minute entry but he had to withdrawn because he has been knocked flat with flu.
