Robert Barrable in his Skoda S2000 was fastest through the first 2 stages and then Daragh O’Riordan powered his Impreza WRC to a quickest time on stage 3. On the middle stage of the loop, Windmills, Barrable pulverised the opposition. He was 14s faster than O’Riordan and 15s up on the tying Niall Maguire, Kevin Barrett and Garry Jennings. Barrable’s stunning little Skoda was showing some of the battle scars of the Sligo roads when he came into service. Robert said he had clipped a barrel on the way into a chicane which had not helped the spoiler! He then went on to say. “The back of the car is not working, it is too hard. We had a few moments. We will probably change tyres here although I am happy enough with the pace”.

Daragh O’Riordan was looking a little happier than he was earlier and said that the car is good and he is going to tackle a Lemsip here at service. Niall Maguire’s co driver Enda Sherry reckons that the car seemed OK after the puncture but the stages are very bumpy and it was difficult to know where to commit. Kevin Barrett had a momentary fright when he came upon a beached OO car in stage 3. Garry Jennings’ co driver Herbie Blackburn admitted that he is feeling pretty rusty and he was having difficulty getting the notes out fast enough to keep pace with Garry’s driving.

Colm Murphy was up to 3rd o/a after stage 2 but after stage 3 the Limerick man was pretty down in the dumps and said. “It looks as if we will be going no further. 5th gear has gone. The problem is we could not get a spare one before the rally and we had to dress up the old gear. It’s a shame because we were really hopping it in stage 3 having a dinger of a battle with Garry Jennings”. When we asked Colm if he did not have a spare box he replied. “All we have is a box of spanners!” Liam McCarthy lost a few seconds when he spun his Corolla WRC on a “dirty square right” in stage 1. Trevor Bustard was a bit cautious on the first stage as he got used to his new co driver John McCafferty. Trevor has gone pretty well through stages 2 and 3. Sam Moffett is a bit disappointed to be off the GpN pace and just can’t understand it. Washington James is struggling to keep his Darrian on the road over the bumps. Roy White has retired his MG. Apparently there was a lot of smoke but we haven’t heard the full story as yet. We reported that Damien Gallagher was stopped in stage 1. He eventually find that a wire had pulled out of the ECU and got going. No sign here yet at service of John Cairns in the GpA Subaru.
