Darren Gass turned in a scintillating time on stage 6, well over a second faster than any of the other top drivers which in Lurgan Park terms is pretty significant. First on the road Kenny McKinstry reported the stage to be very greasy but he reckoned he had a real good run. Derek McGarrity was just a 10th of a second slower than McKinstry and reported no problems but is still steaming mad that Darren Gass was able to take his diversion through stage 5 without incurring any penalties. Eugene Donnelly was another to have a good run and indeed set an equal time with Garry Jennings. There are 2 stages to go and the rally is still wide open, just over 2s covering the top 3 drivers.

Brian O’Mahony discovered after stage 5 that he had a rear wheel puncture on his Metro 6r$ so he improved somewhat through stage 6 and moved up a place as well when Pat O’Connell’s Lancer crashed into the bridge on the stage. Several drivers including Liam Ryan and Gareth Sayers in their Lancers stopped to make sure that O’Connell was OK. The organisers have provisionally awarded nominal times in compensation. Pat O’Connell eventually managed to get going and the damage to his Lancer looks fairly minimal. Mark Massey turned in a very quick time and now leads GpN. Gary Toner’s BMW M3 came off stage 6 with lots of steam coming from under the bonnet which didn’t look too healthy. Wesley Patterson is still the class of the Escort field but a very tight battle is forming up behind for 2nd Escort between Gary McPhillips, Adrian Hetherington and Camillus Bradley who are separated by just over 2s. On an interesting note Frank Kelly chose a full forestry tyre for stage 6 and went 3s faster than his previous time. Alastair Cochrane got away with a huge spin in his Escort but the car is now looking very second hand after he bounced off a few solid objects!
