Following heavy early morning rain the roads had dried out for the opening stage but some of the drivers were not quite in form to enjoy the sunshine when they arrived at the finish of the 18.44km test. Even initial rally leader Declan Boyle had a frown on as he explained that there was something not quite right about his Subaru brakes. Second on the road Niall Maguire said there was something strange with his Impreza gear change. Darragh O`Riordan brought his new Fiesta WRC to a halt at the control and his co-driver Tony McDaid told us. `This man beside me is very sick. We do not know what is wrong`. It did not however show in Darragh`s stage time which was well on the pace.

When Donagh Kelly finished that first stage he remarked that did not feel right with the engine and reportedly his Subaru his since stopped on stage 2, Glaslough. Other drivers missing from the list at the end of stage 1 included Pat Kirk, whose Lancer started up OK in parc ferme but then stopped again and would not re-start. James Stafford in the Darrian did set off for stage 1 but did not appear at the finish.

Most remarkable story of the morning so far was the performance of young Sam Moffett in Kenny McKinstry1s Impreza WRC. Sam only stepped into the car last night for a short test drive and switched on immediately to the Subaru and left-hand drive. There he is 4th o/a and he said at the end of stage 1. `The car is magic, just like Playstation!`

Further stories include: Daniel McKenna who is running 6th on the road, had brake problems. Gary McPhillips said that he personally was not on the button and his Escort was set too soft in the suspension department. Shane Maguire was playing himself in on his first run in a Lancer and his time was 10.38. Stephen Wright picked the wrong tyres and his time was 10.19. Josh Moffett recorded a 10.14 and fastest group N performance we have so far is Martin Doherty on 10.12 in his Lancer. Roy White in his MGS2000 lost a few seconds when he caught and passed James Belton in the Subaru WRC. Tommy Doyle in the Clio R3 recorded a class 7 leading 10.21 but said he found the stage very slippy towards the end.
