The big news in from stage 2, Churchill, is that Barry Meade was fastest to move into the lead of the rally. Brian O’Mahony (Metro 6R4) was 2nd fastest and Shane Maguire was forced to retire when his GpN Impreza suffered a turbo fire. At least half a dozen other drivers stopped and helped to put out the blaze with the use of their own extinguishers. Provisionally this puts Mike Quinn in pole position to win the Top Part West Coast C/ship. However, this cannot be ratified until the rally is over.

Barry Meade is a lot happier now that he has switched from an intermediate to a slick dry weather tyre on his Escort and he set fastest time on stage 3 as well as SS2. Alan Ring said his car just doesn’t have the top speed on the very long straights. Liam McCarthy lost some time when he forgot to switch on the Corolla’s centre differential. Mike Quinn reckons he is suffering a bit through a lack of top speed on the long straights. John McQuaid stalled his Escort and lost a couple of seconds on SS2. Ed O’Callaghan also lost a couple of seconds when he spun his Escort. Vincent O’Shea was one of the drivers who stopped and helped put out the fire in Shane Maguire’s Subaru. Vincent then stopped briefly between stages 2 and 3 to buy a new fire extinguisher. Richard Burke is having gear indicator problems in his Subaru. Jonathan Foley’s Impreza has retired following gearbox trouble and Pat Kelly’s Subaru has stopped because of turbo charger difficulties.

On WRC Wales Rally GB Kris Meeke closed to within 1.8s of Henning Solberg in the race for 3rd position but Kris spun his Mini on the final Power stage and had to be content with 4th o/a. Latvala in his Fiesta WRC won the event from Otsberg with Henning 3rd to make it a Ford top three.
