When rally leader Craig Breen and his co-driver Scott Martin in their Citroen DS3R5 emerged from the Knockboy stage last year’s winner Craig said. ‘It is very tricky in there, so much standing water and mud.’ European Champion Kajetan Kajetanowicz shrugged off the conditions and said. ‘We were on the wrong tyre this morning now we are right’. Craig Breen was fastest on the stage and the Polish driver was just 1s in arrears. Such is the fast and open nature of that Knockboy stage that only a handful of seconds separated the top 10 drivers. Alastair Fisher maintained his 3rd overall position despite a fairly big moment near the end of the stage. Swedish driver Fredrik Ahlin said. ‘It was not so enjoyable’. He admitted he had quite a few moments in the stage. He had said earlier at the service in Ballymoney that he could hear a small noise from his Fiesta’s differential, so hopefully it will hold together until this evening.
Marty McCormack continues to do a fabulous job and holds 5th place in his Skoda S2000. He said. ‘I am loving this, there is a bit more to come but I have to keep it on the road. The set-up was a bit too soft this morning and I have a lot of confidence now that I am on a softer compound tyre’. Josh Moffett in 6th said. ‘That was very difficult, we had plenty of slides’. His brother Sam is hanging on grimly to 9th place, having to drive around a clutch problem on his Fiesta. Sam hopes to get the problem sorted at this evening’s service and have a real go tomorrow. Tom Cave is in 11th place and he told us that he had no time at all to test the car before the rally and everything is very new to him for this weekend. ‘but it is what it is’.
Wojciech Chuchala continues to be the top group N contender and is 12th overall. The Polish driver said that he has better tyres for this loop and also it is a long way to go and he is prepared for anything. Robert Woodside is maintaining 14th position and he is another one on a learning curve with his Fiesta R5 and also not used to the specified FIA tyres. Scottish visitor David Bogie is still having brake worries, and he said that the pedal pressure is coming and going which is annoying but not really slowing him down. Marijan Griebel is still having some clutch problems with his Opel Adam but has held his lead in RC3. Julius Tannert, also in an Opel Adam, is 2nd and Chris Ingram 3rd. Rob Duggan is 5th in the category and Wm Creighton in his Peugeot 6th. When Hungarian driver Laszlo Nemet brought his Peugeot 208 into the Ballymoney satellite service we asked him if it was going well and he said…’Not really. On the first stage I caught a car 5km before the end and had to follow him. On 2nd stage I made a mistake at junction and had to reverse. On the 3rd stage after 5km the car stopped with electrics. Then it stopped 5 more times in the stage and we had to switch it on and off to start. Now we pray a lot!’ On another subject – the reason for Desi Henry’s 50s time loss in SS3 was that his Skoda suffered a puncture. We have no time for him as yet for 4.
In the National Rally after the long Glens stage Derek McGarrity has a 17s lead over Wesley Patterson with Declan McNaughton 3rd. Keith White is 4th: Alistair Cochrane 5th and Rodney White 6th. Clive Kilpatrick leads GpN in his Lancer and is 7th o/a.
