Many of the drivers remarked about how difficult the conditions were this afternoon. Rally leader Craig Breen commented when he brought his Citroen into service here at the Kings Hall in Belfast. ‘One of my most enjoyable days rallying. OK, I touched a wheel on the last one but it was no problem. I thought it would have been a tighter pace today’ Second placed Kajetanowicz reported all well with his Fiesta and he is looking forward to tomorrow. The competitors have service here for 30m and then travel down to Newtownards for the very short spectator stage. Then on Saturday there are 8 stages.
Alastair Fisher in 3rd place told us that he is concentrating very much on scoring Tarmac Championship points after his non-finish in West Cork. As engineer Dom Buckley surveyed Alastair’s Fiesta the young Fermanagh man continued. ‘I kept it steady this afternoon, you could throw it away so easy’. Fredrik Ahlin in 4th emerged from his Fiesta, patted the bonnet and said. ‘A few small scratches, not too dramatic, a good run’. Indeed Ahlin was second fastest on stage 5 behind Craig Breen.
Marty McCormack is an astonishing 3rd overall in his older model Fabia S2000. He recounted that at the start of stage 6 he had a few moments as the car was on cold tyres, and there was oil dropped on the road from Frank Kelly’s Escort blow up on the first loop. Martin continued – ‘I held back too much, down a gear and then as the stage went on I felt really good and it was up a nick’. Josh Moffett has been running down the order all day and when he eventually reached service he told us. ‘I did not take any big risks, there is definitely more in it. I will maybe push harder tomorrow’ Stephen Wright is now 14th o/a and he said. ‘We had a few issues this morning and it knocked me out of my stride. We swapped tyres for this rally and it took a while to get used to them, it went better this afternoon’. Chris Ingram said he had zero confidence in the wet and he only drives well when he is confident – he is currently 28th and 4th RC3 which is still being led by Griebel in his Opel Adam. Rob Duggan is 5th RC3 and he told us that because they are contesting the BRC their cars are to a different technical specification to the ERC registered Adams, so it is not a straightforward comparison and felt he went well today.
