Most of the top drivers improved their times through the 2nd stage, with Mervyn Wedlock again fastest with a time of 9.32, David Percy was 9.33, Pat Higgins 9.34 and Gordon Rodgers 9.35.  Close stuff indeed.  Wedlock reckoning he could have been slightly faster if he had been a bit easier on the throttle out of junctions. As it was he was getting loads of wheelspin. Indeed many of the drivers reported that, although the stage was probably drier, it seemed to be greasy perhaps, and many lurid moments were recorded.

John O'Sullivan had his Peugeot in the shrubbery, in the same place as he went off in the familiarisation run. Freddie Walker, also off the road, joked that he was only really in a field looking for an oul yoke to keep co driver Finbar Mangan happy.  Freddie's time over half a minute too slow, and he is slightly out of the picture now on 20.31.  Killarney man John Hickey was another reporting lots of wheelspin. John Hennessey went well that time to move into 8th place.  Shaun Gallagher was in the running for fastest 1600 modified, but the Letterkenny man spun his Corolla in stage 2, his total now 20.03.  John Kearney is on 20.02 in his 1600 Escort. John Rock was 7s slower through stage 2 than on his first run, John reporting a very big moment, but he is still right up there in the 1600 class. Trevor Harding in the Puma was another to spin the Cloneen man dropping 10s.  Enda O'Brien is right in the picture with his 1600 Escort on a total of 20.04.  Alan Smithwick (42) went well on the first stage, but no sign of him yet at service. Earlier we thought that perhaps Tom Murphy had retired his Escort because of oil pressure problems, Tom, with Greg McCarthy on the notes, got going but is running very late, total now 20.20.
Sheena O'Brien has lost a lot of time, her little Corsa recevding 2 punctures. Gordon Percy retired on the first stage after damaging his car.  Mick Fogarty was slightly disappointed not to be a fraction quicker thru the 2nd stage but he is still well placed. Tom Holton recovered from his 1st stage puncture, his time in the F2 Escort 10.09 for SS2 despite getting stuck at a hairpin right. More news later. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON
SWEDISH - ROVANPERA wins from Radstrom, Sainz 3rd. Makinen rolled out on final stage. C.McRae 9th.
