Niall Maguire's victory here today on this Hotel Kilmore backed Cavan Rally moves him into the lead of the Dunlop National Championship with 67 points, Paul Harris stays 2nd on 60 and Denis Cronin 3rd on 52.  Maguire had a ball today, thoroughly enjoyed himself and laughed when he came off the last stage, telling us "We had gear linkage trouble towards the end and I was trying not to use the gears, but I wasn't using my head either, and I put the car up the bank.  I'm really pleased with the win, and of course it throws the championship wide open".  Tim McNulty did an absolute flier to charge through into 2nd place over the last few stages.  His time on the final stage 9, which wet, slippy and treacherous a full 17s faster then Maguire, 14s faster then David Armstrong.  Eugene Donnelly held 2nd place for most of the day,but was just overhauled towards the end. Eugene had an overshoot on that last stage, which cost time and probably 2nd place.  Fourth placed David Armstrong had little bits of time loss during the day and told us "We couldn't have gone much harder at the end".

Patrick Elliott wins group N from Joe McHugh.  Mac McKenna had a brilliant run to take class 11A from Norman Armstrong. Norman saying "It was slippy all day, but we never stopped trying".  Trevor Lancashire was delighted to at long last finish an event, his bonus being winning class 11.  Trevor was just outside the leaderboard on a total of 1.27.10.  James & Ann Foley had a mixed day with many spins and problems, but should have done enough to take the class.

Other stories include - Micky McArdle easing back over the last couple ofstages as the smell of gearbox oil permeated the BMW.  Sean McArdle went through a wall on the last stage and dropped from 6th to 10th, lucky to make the finish.  Mervyn Wedlock had a stage 8 spin at the hairpin, that was on cold tyres, Mervyn just outside the leaderboard on 1.27.29. Provisionally Paul Gallagher looks to have pipped Charlie Beatty by 16s for cl.10 lead. Looking back slightly - Derek Jobb/Ivan Fisher rolled out of the rally in stage 3, the Nissan was badly damaged, driver and co-driver OK.  Mick McQuaid/Victor Fields unfortunately had a bad accident on stage 6, both have been taken to hospital, hopefully the injuries are not too serious.  John Tully/Brian Duggan retired their Escort with broken suspension earlier on.  No more space..many thanks to all who helped us during the day and congratulations to the club for keeping the event going so well in such difficult weather conditions..BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON
