The opening stage, Dromore, skirting along the edge of the Burren, was damp and slippy as the competitors faced the 16.5km test. Tim McNulty was trying a new tyre on his Subaru and it seemed to work well as he was 12s faster than his nearest challenger Niall Maguire. However, even Tim found the stage very slippery but in overall terms he reported that everything was working well. Niall Maguire’s co driver Barry Goodman said that they were hampered slightly as the intercom plug had pulled out of Niall’s helmet.

Young Sam Moffett reported the stage “brutal slippy”. While his chief group N championship rival Shane Maguire was a bit slower and he said that he lost a bit of confidence in the slippy conditions. Fastest of the conventional GpN cars was Josh Moffett, his lancer 3s up on his big brother Sam.

Mike Quinn was fastest of the Escorts and led class 14 after that opening test. Wesley Patterson was 2nd in cl.14 despite losing a few seconds when he caught Shane Maguire’s Subaru. Wesley told us that the spray from Shane’s Subaru covered his screen with muck and there was no fluid in Wesley’s windscreen washers! Anthony O’Halloran had a good run in his Manta to lie 3rd in class 14 and Washington James in his Darrian 4th. Ed O’Callaghan said that he is taking it a bit cautiously this morning as it is his first rally back after an accident. He still led class 13 with Declan Gallagher in his Starlet 2nd. Frank Kelly would normally be the class 13 benchmark but his Escort was down in 15th place after stage 1. Frank picked a dry weather tyre for the rear of the Escort, a courageous choice. Neil Pierce was best of the class 11 contenders in his Civic.

Times coming in to Angus Sealy’s computer after SS2, Ballinruan, show Tim McNulty fastest by 10s from Kevin Barrett with Niall Maguire 3rd fastest a further 5s back. Josh Moffett was again quickest in GpN by 12s from his brother Sam. Mike Quinn was quickest Cl14 car by 1s from the similar Escort of Wesley Patterson. Ed O’Callaghan in his cl.13 Escort set a cracking time, equal to Quinn. Anthony O’Halloran was a few seconds down in his Manta.
