Tim McNulty and his co-driver Paul Kiely scored a memorable and hard-earned victory on this Ulster Rally, their Subaru finishing 15s ahead of the similar Impreza WRC of last year’s winner Derek McGarrity/James McKee. McGarrity led for most of this rally until McNulty edged ahead on stage 12, Tardree. In stage 13 (Slieve Gallion) Meath man McNulty put the matter beyond doubt with a time 18s faster than McGarrity over the 15.5 mile moorland stage. It was little consolation for McGarrity to set fastest time on the final stage. The damage had been done; it was McNulty’s event. An added bonus for Tim is taking the lead in the Tarmac C/ship. Kevin Barrett is now 2nd in the Tarmac points and Darragh O’Riordan 3rd. Darren Gass/Enda Sherry finished 3rd in the rally in their older model Subaru following a very impressive display from the 22 year old Armagh man.

Garry Jennings & Rory Kennedy also got a great result today by winning Rally NI in their Mitsubishi Lancer. Marty McCormack/David Moynihan gave them a fantastic run for their money over the last few stages but their Citroen DS3 was always under pressure on the dry roads to make any impression on the 4 wheel drive car in front. Marty still finished top of the highly competitive R3 class and put on a faultless and very impressive display during the rally. Tommy Doyle/Liam Moynihan were 2nd in class R3 and 3rd o/a following an excellent run. Fourth placed David Bogie, with Kevin Rae co-driving, maintains his lead in the British Rally C/ship. Sam Moffett has moved into the GpN lead in the Tarmac C/ship.

Kieran Daly just pipped Scott McElhinney for top honours in the Citroen Racing Trophy and takes the lion’s share of the €5000 prize fund. Last minute retirement was Jonny Leonard who put his Fiesta off the road in SS13. In the Historic Rally Dessie Nutt won category 1 from Derek Boyd in a similar Porsche. David Stokes won category 2 from Mark Falvey, both in Escorts. Tomas Davies was 1st in Category 3 from Conor Corkill, both in Escorts. Jimmy McRae won the FIA category from John Keatley. Harry Brown/Martin McGrath in the Cash Converters Avenger won their Historic class.
