Inexorably Tim McNulty is closing the gap on Ulster Rally leader Derek McGarrity. Through the 7 mile Lisnamuck stage fornenst Draperstown McNulty was 1s faster than McGarrity. It is not a lot but every second counts and with 4 stages to go there could be a grandstand finish. Darren Gass in 3rd place has no real chance of improving unless one of the cars in front has a problem and the same applies really to Darragh O’Riordan in 4th.
In the Rally NI Garry Jennings, in his own words was on the door handles through the last couple of stages in his efforts to keep Marty McCormack at bay. Marty, in the 2 wheel drive Citroen DS3, was fastest through stage 10 but was disappointed to be slower than Jennings through SS9, Slieve Gullion. McCormack reckons he may have picked too hard a compound tyre. Tommy Doyle in 3rd was pushing hard also in his Clio, and although 4th placed David Bogie closed the gap slightly, Tommy is still holding a superb position. Sam Moffett in 6th reckons that he needs new tyres for this next loop of stages. Elfyn Evans was fastest through SS9 but was a couple of seconds down through SS10 and he is wondering has his Impreza lost a little edge in the power stakes.
Desi Henry was up to 8th o/a and leading the Citroen Racing Trophy (UK) but has crashed out on a downhill 4 right over gravel in Lisnamuck. The following cars had to squeeze past the stricken Citroen. Joe McGonigle lost a little time when he spun his Citroen. Scott McElhinney is now piling the pressure on Kieran Daly in the race to be best Citroen Racing contender.
Three times Ulster Rally winner Eugene Donnelly is co-driving this weekend for New York visitor Liam Egan and their Lancer is in 20th place. Eugene is thoroughly enjoying the run and even had time to see some of the family on his home stage Lisnamuck. Finnish visitors Jussi Kumpumaki and his co driver Mikael Korhonen set two really good times through stages 8 and 9 and the 2 young Finns thoroughly enjoyed the 2 stages through the Sperrins. They are leading class R2 and hold the best Fiesta tag as well as 8th o/a. The other Finnish crew of Mikko Pajunen/Jani Salo have set some really good times in their Twingo to pull back some of the time they lost with the first stage puncture. Unofficial news from Rally German is that Craig Breen has moved into the lead of the FIA Academy section.
