Derek McGarrity was a full 17s faster than Tim McNulty through this final Friday night stage, Torr Head 2. The roads were pretty dry and Darren Gass was able to use his slick tyres to good effect to set 2nd fastest time. The drying roads possibly didn’t suit McNulty’s set up. He was within 2s of McGarrity starting the stage but the overnight gap is now almost 20s. In the Rally NI Garry Jennings holds a substantial overnight lead from Marty McCormack. Garry is struggling to keep the momentum going because of the broken exhaust manifold on his Lancer. Marty is delighted to hold 2nd o/a and best 2-wheel drive at the overnight halt. Elfyn Evans had a huge moment on Torr Head but his Pirelli Impreza survived to set fastest BRC time. Jonny Greer lost more time when his Skoda S2000 dropped on to 2wd.
Information from stage 5, Glendun: Tim McNulty fastest by 6s from Derek McGarrity. Roads intermittently wet. McGarrity’s time loss in stage 4 was not just a stall, but an electrical glitch as well and the wipers stopped working and also the launch control. In the NI Rally leader Garry Jennings reported a broken exhaust manifold that is costing time. Elfyn Evans was fastest through SS5 and very happy with the way the Pirelli Impreza is going. David Bogie had to run 1 slick and 1 intermediate on the front having clipped a stone in SS4. Tommy Doyle’s Clio was restored to clear vision following the misted screen problem and he set a good time. Desi Henry continues to lead the Citroen Racing Trophy contenders. Kieran Daly Is into 2nd. Scott McElhinney is 3rd and Joe McGonigle 4th but losing time with a misfire on his Citroen. The problem with Mark Donnelly’s Clio would appear to centre on a damaged wire in the loom and the car is still misfiring when it hits a bump. Callum Black, going very well in the Swift, had a huge aquaplaning moment in Glendun.
In the Historic Category 1 Rally after SS4 Dessie Nutt led from Rikki Proffitt from Derek Boyd – all in Porsches. In Category 2 after SS5 David Stokes led by ove ra minute from Rupert Lomax, both in Escorts. Keith McIvor was 3rd in his Porsche. Tomas Davies 1st in Cat. 3 from Rob Smith, Conor Corkill 3rd.
