In the WRC section of the Ulster Rally Derek McGarrity in his Subaru has been fastest over the opening 3 stages. Derek said here at service that there places where has gone faster in previous years and he is driving well within himself, but had a real good flow down the Glendun stage. Tim McNulty in 2nd said. “I’m bedding myself in. I have never done Torr Head before and I didn’t want to make a mess of it”. Darren Gass in 3rd place felt he was too nervous at the start and the suspension of his Subaru wa s abit hard. He also lost a few seconds at the hairpin in Torr Head but otherwise OK. Darragh O’Riordan lost a lot of time through having the wrong tyres on the rear of his Subaru and his co driver Tony McDaid said. “Time to press the re-set button”. Tarmac Championship leader Kevin Barrett reckons he needs a bit more commitment over the Co. Antrim crests.
In the NI Rally section Garry Jennings has a 13s lead over Marty McCormack. Garry reported no real problems. Marty feels that he could do with stiffening the suspension of his Citron DS3 ever so slightly. Paint marks down the side of Marty’s car was evidence of him having to take evasive action to get around Alan Ring’s Lancer. Marty steered his Citroen along a low wall to get past the struggling Mitsubishi but still could not avoid a bit of contact with the other car. Ring was on the point of retiring with broken transmission on his Lancer. Third placed Jonny Greer is trying to adjust to the fantastic brakes on his Skoda and his times are picking up. Tommy Doyle in 4th told us “The Clio is perfect so far. I am pushing hard but have had no big moments”. Elfyn Evans dropped over 2m with his first stage puncture but has set fastest GpN time in the Pirelli Impreza over the Torr Head stage in the NI Rally. Barry Greer has retired his Fiesta because of a broken rear beam. Jeremy Taylor/Jonathan Patterson picked intermediate tyres for the first loop which was the wrong choice.
Further stories include: Scott McElhinney’s Citroen C2R2 is suffering from a slight misfire. Finnish driver Siim Plangi lost a couple of minutes when his Twingo sustained a puncture on the opening stage and he had to stop and change the wheel. Peter Taylor has parked his Clio at the end of Torr Head with a reported broken gearbox. Callum Black had a close call on Torr Head when he damaged 2 rims on his Swift but still set a good time and is 7th o/a.
In the Historic Rally Will Onions has crashed his Escort out. The Belgian driver Stefaan Stouf has parked his Escort in SS1 following mechanical trouble. David Stokes leads historic category 2 from Rupert Lomax with Keith McIvor, who has a misfire in his Porsche, 3rd.
On Rally Germany Loeb was fastest through SS6 to lead from Ogier with Hirvonen 3rd, Sordo 4th and Kris Meeke 5th following a spin. Petter Solberg is 6th, 2s down on Meeke.
