Darren Gass, co-driven by his sister Kerri, put up a superb display today in his Subaru to win this Orchard Motorsport Lurgan Park Rally by over 18s from Kenny McKinstry/Noel Orr in a similar Impreza WRC. Denis Biggerstaff, co-driven by his son Stuart, just pipped Garry Jennings/Kerry McCarter for 3rrd o/a. Consolation for Garry was winning Group N. Darren Gass commented at the finish. “It was a good day out, great craic. Not a handling all day and the organisation was one hundred per cent again”. Darren’s winning margin was one of the biggest in recent years emphasising 23 year old Darren’s superb driving talent. One of the first to congratulate him at the end of the last stage was Kenny McKinstry, and he said. “Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have won it, but I didn’t have the pace to beat Darren. Still, it was a great day.” The race for 3rd was fairly dramatic at the end and Denis Biggerstaff said. “Garry was going very hard and we didn’t have a good last stage, I was too cautious over the gravel, but it was enough”. Garry Jennings he admitted he was “A wee bit wild” on the penultimate stage and that cost him the place.

Mark Doyle in 5th had a great run but his Celica started to misfire towards the end, possibly as a result of running low on fuel. Under the regulations re-fuelling is no longer allowed in the Park. Derek McGeehan set some good times towards the end to reinforce his 6th o/a. Emma McKinstry just managed to keep Ray Brammer at bay and hold on to 7th. Wesley Patterson/Martin McGarrity were best of the Escort Challenge contenders from Adrian Hetherington with Martin Teggart 3rd. Keith McIvor won the Historic section in his Porsche 911 with Stephen Mawhinney 2nd in his Sunbeam Lotus. Stanley Ballantine crashed his Lancer on the final stage and McIvor had to do a minor detour across the grass to avoid the stricken Mitsubishi, but he had enough to hand to take the Historic victory. Jimmy McRae was 4th in that Class 6 with Gary Owens 3rd.
Finally for now well done to the North Armagh MC organising team for laying on such a superb event. Our thanks to Brian Stinson of Orchard Motorsport, Craigavon Borough Council and everyone who helped and supported the rally.
