Last year’s winner Darren Gass set the pace through the opening stage of this Orchard Motorsport Lurgan Park Rally. It was expected that Kenny McKinstry would be his closest challenger but Garry Jennings turned in a superb stage time to equal Darren Gass. At stage finish Kenny McKinstry said. “All is fine. Maybe I was too cautious over the gravel but I still thought it was a good time”. Darren Gass commented. “It felt untidy but OK”. Garry Jennings said. “It was a good run but there is more left”. Denis Biggerstaff has just rebuilt the engine of his Impreza WRC and he felt the car was a little bit “dead of itself” but otherwise it was a good run although Denis felt he wasn’t being aggressive enough.
Further comments from the top drivers included: Gary White said. “Technology moves on. Have you a packet of horse power in your pocket for this old group A car”. John McGaffin found the stage to be very slippy. Mark Massey said he was too slow over the gravel and his time was 2.16.2. Emma McKinstry reckons she buzzed her Subaru’s clutch off the start line and lost a little time on the first couple of corners. Scottish visitor Billy McClelland found his Lancer to have no power out of the corners. Simon Woodside in his BMW set a time of 2.21.5 and felt he wasn’t being brave enough over the gravel section. Jimmy McRae in the challenging Firenza Can-am set a time of 2.29.1 and reckoned it was getting better. Alan Cassells missed a gear in his Peugeot and the car was smoking badly at stage finish.
Wesley Patterson was fastest of the Mk2 Escorts and felt he was braking too early for the corners. Mickey Conlon spun his Escort at a square left. Andrew Mullen’s Lancer hit a tree at a square right over the bridge, still going but not a great time for that stage. Gary White in the Mk1 Escort was a couple of seconds faster than Trevor Wilson in his Mk1. Gary is on his first rally for 7 years. Gary has been ill over that period and it is good to see him out and about again. This is the first rally for his Mk1 Escort.
