The big news in from stage 6 is that early leader Eamonn Hanley has crashed his Subaru out of the rally. Eamonn and his co driver Frank Curtin led for the first 2 stages and then they were a close 2nd to Denis Cronin through stages 3 and 4. In stage 5 Cronin produced a tremendous time, 207s faster than Hanley and then in stage 6 Hanley put his car off the road. Reportedly the Derek McGarrity Circuit of Ireland winning Impreza is not badly damaged and should be OK for the Donegal International.
Denis Cronin commented when he came into service that the harder compound Pirelli tyres that he picked for that loop worked brilliantly and also that stage 5, Mass Rock, is one of the nicest stages that he has ever driven and he had a real good go on it. Denis also said that with a lead now of over a minute going into the final stages he will ease back his pace. Ed O’Callaghan was having problems earlier today with a fluffing engine but a crank shaft sensor replacement has transformed the car and Ed was fastest Escort through stage 5. Barry Meade however was fastest through stages 4 and 6 and is looking very solid in 2nd place. Fourth placed Mike Quinn continues to get used to his hired Escort and commented here at service. “There is still a lot of learning in it. I want to bring it home in one piece”.
Shane Maguire in 5th place did not seem particularly happy when he brought his Impreza into service and he said. “The fuel pump is noisy, perhaps we are losing some power”. David Percy is driving an ex Kenny McKinstry works type Escort Maxi and he has clocked up some very good times to move into 7th place. He reported that the back tyres were completely gone at the end of that loop of stages and that was despite the fact that he lightened the rear of the car by over 2 stone by swapping the steel boot lid for a fibreglass model. Pat Kelly has just held on to his top 10 place although his Impreza is suffering a broken manifold. Ray O’Sullivan is lying 14th o/a and his co driver Michelle O’Shea is feeling unwell but still managing to do the job. Peter Barrable continues to lead the Citroens although Scott McElhinney was fastest through a couple of stages on that last loop. Peter admitted to some scrappy driving. Scott’s main aim this weekend is to prepare for his home Donegal Rally. Anthony Collins put his Civic off on a square right corner in stage 6 and dropped over a minute, damage to the car minimal.
