Kevin Barrett was fastest through the opening Sunday stage. When Kevin’s Impreza WRC reached the finish line of that Kilcoona test co-driver Sean Mullally rolled his eyes skywards and said. “I could hardly the the notes out fast enough”. Kevin admitted that he had been trying pretty hard and he was running Pirelli winter tyres, possibly not the fastest choice but probably the safest to dispel the standing water on the roads around Headford. Rally leader Tim McNulty said. “We were taking it very steady, it was very wet in there with a lot of standing water”. Third placed Alan Ring also said he was being careful and was keeping an eye out all the time for the puddles.
Tommy Doyle in 4th is driving the stages with the windows of his Clio open to try to counteract the misted up windscreen. At least Tommy has the power steering fixed and is managing the keep the hard charging Sam Moffett at bay. Ross Forde told us that he at last has his Lancer 100 per cent fit and holds 6th place. David Quigley had a great run through the Kilcoona stage although he did bang the side of his Civic during a very ambitious move at a chicane.
In the National rally Tom Flaherty in his Escort maintains a substantial lead with Geoffrey Dolan now up into 2nd in his Sunbeam following the retirement of Pat Kelly. Interestingly Dolan was fastest National car though stage 11. In the Historic Rally Ed Murphy can afford to ease back slightly as he has just a big lead. Seamus Burke in 2nd set very good times through 10 and 11. Fastest Historic this morning was Ray Cunningham, although he is out of the rally and just doing the Sunday Run.
