There was a major upset when Denis Cronin, who led after the opening stage, crashed his Subaru on stage 2, Glanapucha. Denis was braking into a square corner when reportedly the Subaru took a little wobble and slid on into a bank. Helen O’Sullivan has been taken to hospital for a check up as her back was sore. The remaining cars went through the stage in convoy. In stage 3 Keith Cronin was fastest, although having lost 5m on the first stage when his lancer suffered a puncture, Keith is well down the order.
Daragh O’Riordan now leads the rally although he did not have a great time in stage 3 as he put his hand down to adjust the ani lag control and switched it off by mistake! Melvyn Evans in 2nd has a problem on his Subaru with the “LS” and his mechanics are checking out the electronics here at service. Kevin Barrett had a very good run through stage 2 and was 2nd fastest. The Triton Showers man reported no problems. Keith Cronin said after that fastest time on SS3. “We just took it steady. The car feels good but it takes a bit of getting used to after the Subaru we drove on the British Championship”.
Kevin Kelleher, who led GpN after the opening stage, is stopped in stage 3, his Lancer backed into a lane at a shiny square right. Reason for retirement as yet unknown. This leaves Sean Flanagan leading group N from Eugene Meegan.
Top Mark 2 Escort man Declan Boyle lost time in stage 3 when he hit a wheel on a slippy square left corner. Declan told us that he started the stage with a burst suspension strut, possibly a legacy of the jumpy Donegal Harvest Rally. Ed O’Callaghan is setting the pace amongst the Mk2 Escorts and reported a clean run so far. Mike Quinn is stepping up his pace and said he’s getting his confidence back although stage 3 was very slippy.
Sean Flanagan’s GpN Impreza had damage down the passenger’s side and bits of straw sticking out of the seams between the doors. Co-driver Brian Duggan joked. “Its farmers revenge”. Obviously referring to bashing into a straw bale chicane. Eugene Meegan in the Evo 10 reckons his car has the anti lag set too aggressively and it is affecting the grip. Alan O’Callaghan in his GpA Impreza is on a total of 30.50 and said it has been a disaster so far, the car is misfiring and feels bad. Vincent O’Shea’s Escort Cosworth was parked up between stages 1 & 2. Lloyd Hutchinson had a brilliant run through 3 although he told us that the Mini’s tyres were stone cold and the found the stage to be very slippy.
