When Garry Jennings brought his Subaru into service after stage 6 he had a lead of almost a minute on Seamus Leonard with Niall Maguire nearly 30s further back. In rally terms Jennings’ lead is a lifetime and as he emerged from the McKinstry Subaru he said. “Its fingers crossed now. I’m short shifting to save the car but I would really like to be fastest on every stage. There’s still a bit to go, so we’ll see”. Seamus Leonard had a little bit of intercom trouble in stage 5 and then stalled the car in stage 6, the 2 incidents conspiring to mean that he meant no impression on the leader. Niall Maguire set healthier times through stages 5 and 6 and he said. “We enjoyed that, had a good run, but Garry is flying”.

Gary McPhillips in 4th place and leading Mk2 Escort lost a second or two in stage 5 when he lifted off at the scene of Wesley Patterson’s accident, and also braked a little early for the flying finish boards. As for Patterson he started stage 5 15s in arrears of McPhillips but got too enthusiastic down a long bumpy straight and was carrying too much speed into a turn 5 left and his Escort shot across the grass into the ditch. There was no damaged bu Wesley lost around 2m. Declan Boyle is now Gary McPhillips’ closes challenger in the race for best Escort and Declan had a good run through 5 and 6 but has decided not to use the paddle change in the car and has reverted to the conventional gear shift. Brian Brogan dropped a little bit of time when his Escort collided with a chicane. Adrian Hetherington lost a couple of seconds in stage 5 compared to the quickest Escorts. He admitted to being a bit shy on the fast stuff. He then had a good time through 6.

Pat Kirk continues to lead group N and had a clean run through that last loop of stages. Stuart Darcy is now 2nd GpN although he reported his Lancer to be a bit “wandery”. Trevor Bustard is driving his Lancer on the door handles in his efforts to make up for the down on power engine. Trevor is having a real ball and of course the spectators love it. Cyril Doherty was well fixed in GpN but his Impreza has stopped in stage 5. Geoffrey Dolan has his Sunbeam gearbox fixed and is going again.

Samuel Kelso is leading Cl.13 and lying 11th o/a. Michael Conlon is 2nd Cl.13 and having a great battle with Kelso but a broken exhaust has caused intercom troubles.
