Garry Jennings was not quite so dominant through stage 3 as he had been on the opening 2 stages but he still set a fastest time, by 1s from the similar Subaru of Seamus Leonard. Gary McPhillips was 3rd fastest through the stages, 3s up on Niall Maguire. When Jennings brought his McKinstry Impreza to a halt on the outskirts of Convoy he said. “I stalled it twice at the start of the stage and lost quite a few seconds.” Seamus Leonard said. “Everything worked out well on that one”. Niall Maguire had no real problems in the stage but there is no doubt he is not showing the short of form that took him to victory here last year.
Wesley Patterson had a softer compound tyres fitted for this loop and he was a lot happier after that stage 3. Gary McPhillips made little comment but just said everything worked well. Manus Kelly was running slightly later in the running order than we expected. It transpired that his Escort had sustained a puncture at the start area and he was able to get it changed before starting the stage. John Cairns came up a place on the leaderboard after that stage 3 having set a real good time. He discovered after the opening 2 tests that his Subaru was suffering from a faulty shock absorber.
Declan Boyle set a cracking time for the stage and reported no problems.
In Group N Pat Kirk was fastest from Stuart Darcy with Donagh Kelly 3rd fastest. We mentioned that at the last service Darcy’s car was making strange noises from the transmission. Stuart has been told just to drive it! It seems to be working. Trevor Bustard was over 10s down on the fastest GpN guys through the stage and his co-driving brother Kenny said. “The car seems to be down on power, you could eat a packet of crisps going up the straights!” Cyril Doherty in his GpN Impreza reckons he was held up for a few seconds in stage 3 when he was held up by a struggling Mk2 Escort. Cyril still set a decent time and his total now is 29.39.
