Derek McGarrity was fastest through stage 4, by 4s from Tim McNulty and Tim still leads. Conditions were pretty wet with many of the drivers reporting mud pulled out from the ditches and Wesley Patterson even reckoning that there was some oil on the stage. It is not surprising therefore that many of the drivers were slower than their first time through the stage. Tyre choice remained critical. Melvyn Evans reported a few slides in his Subaru and seemed to be on a tyre which is coping with the wet conditions fairly well. Derek McGarrity joked that he is on an economy driver and was on the same tyres as he had on his Subaru for the first loop. No.1 seed Niall Maguire seemed to be on more of a dry weather tyre and was struggling.
In the Group N category Pat Kirk was fastest on 7.45. Anthony O’Halloran and Shane Maguire both recorded 7.46. Pat Kirk joked at stage finish. “There’s life in the auld dog yet”. Anthony O’Halloran said he was pushing a lot harder through that Lickeen Lake stage than he was on the first run and yet his time was just the same. Sean Flanagan in his GpN Impreza had a decent time through stage 4, just 2s down on O’Halloran & Maguire, but Sean is well down the order following his earlier problems and his total now is 38.58. Trevor Bustard fitted new tyres to the front of his Lancer and he has come on to the pace pretty well recording 7.53. Alan O’Callaghan had 2 spins through stage 3 and lost a bit of time but set a good time through stage 4, his total is now 33.51. Lloyd Hutchinson in the Mini is just outside the top 10 on a total of 33.00. Patrick & Chris Horan in their Nova set a great pace through the opening 3 stages to lie 12th o/a and lead cl.11.
Joe Connolly caught a car in stage 2 and lost a little bit of time, the Red Mills man now down in 34th after stage 3. Car 112 Sean Maher & Fiona Hickey have retired their Mk2 Escort with a broken rear link bar.
