Welshman Melvyn Evans was a little undecided before the start of the rally whether he would go flat out or play the percentage game in deference to his championship title hopes. It looks like thorough that opening stage he has opted for the former course of action, as his time of 7m11s for the wet and slippery Lickeen test. Derek McGarrity was just 2s down and at stage finish when we asked the Co. Antrim man how he had gone, he laughed and said. “Like a youngster!” Tim McNulty has not been out in a rally car for quite a while although he did a short test last Wednesday, and he was just a little cautious, 7s down on Evans. Niall Maguire is generally a slow starter and it showed this morning with his 4th fastest time. Daragh O’Riordan is running new suspension on his Impreza and he was another bedding himself in on that opening stage. Daragh’s intention today is to get back in the rally groove in preparation for his home Cork 20 International 2 weeks ahead.
In Group N it was Shane \Maguire who was setting the pace. Local man Anthony O’Halloran found the stage slippy and was being a little cautious. Sean Flanagan was also erring on the side of safety and he was just outside the top 10 on a time of 7.59. Pat Kelly did a 7.53 and Lloyd Hutchinson in the Mini did 7.58. Pat Kirk arrived at stage finish with smoke belching from the rear brakes of his GpN Lancer but there certainly wasn’t much wrong with his time of 8.01. When queried about the smoke Pat & co driver Peter Ward joked “We’re having a barbecue!”. In the race for 2 wheel drive honours Wesley Patterson has made a great start. Declan Boyle was 11s down on Patterson and said at stage finish. “We had a wee overshoot but there was no wild time lost”. Mike Quinn set a time of 7.58 and he remarked that he’s just building up his confidence.
