Kenny McKinstry felt he had a good time through stage 4 but he was over a second slower than Derek McGarrity and indeed fastest of all through the stage was Darren Gass who was 1.9s up on McKinstry. On our last RallyNews we quoted Kenny as saying “I’m just not ticking the boxes”. It certainly looks that way at the moment, but there’s a long way to go. The stages are now being changed to run in the opposite direction for the afternoon and perhaps that will bring a change of fortune for Kenny. Derek McGarrity reported no problems at all. Darren Gass said after his stage 4 run. “I can’t go any harder than that but I was trying to make up for the mistakes in stage 3”. Eugene Donnelly also had a very good run and he said. “I’m still lacking confidence on the gravel. When the car steps out I’m not keeping the pressure on”. Gary White ran wide on one corner that cost him a second or two. Brian O’Mahony admitted to two small mistakes in that stage.
Denis Biggerstaff was having a real struggle to get the gearbox and clutch changed on his Metro 6R4 and there is no stage 4 time in for him as yet. Gary Toner spun his BMW, happily with no damage. Liam Ryan in the silver Lancer at No.16 set a good time through stage 3 but was slightly slower in stage 4, the front left wheel of the Lancer showing signs of contact with the scenery. Gareth Gilchrist’s Lancer came off stage 4 with the front wheels knocked askew, testimony to hitting a chicane. Kieron Graffin was fastest in GpN through stage 4 with Pat O’Connell 2nd fastest. Cashel man O’Connell leads the category from Massey. Wesley Patterson was fastest Escort again by 2.5 seconds from Gary McPhillips who has now moved into 2nd o/a in the Modified section. Martin Taggart and Mervyn Wedlock are having a great battle for the 2 litre class though Taggart admitted to a huge moment in the gravel section of stage 4. Adrian Hetherington also admitted to a mistake on the gravel section while both Callum Duffy and James MacGillivray who have made the trip from the isle of Mull are going well though MacGillivray suffered a sticking throttle in his Escort in stage 4. Alistair Cochrane had a spin in his Escort in stage 4. Latest news on Denis Biggerstaff is that he has retired.
