There were still only fractions of a second between the top drivers through stage 3 with Kenny McKinstry .1 of a second faster than Derek McGarrity and Darren Gass 3rd quickest, .1 of a second up on Eugene Donnelly. McKinstry told us. “I’m just not ticking the boxes. There’s nothing wrong, I’m going hard but trying to brake a little later and then you get some under steer”. When Derek McGarrity brought his Subaru into the control some damaged paint work on the front left corner was evidence of just how hard the Glengormley man is trying, and he cut a corner just a little bit too tight towards the finish of the stage. Eugene Donnelly said. “I had a great run, still getting used to the car again and I tried a harder tyre, but really I am surprised to be on this pace”. Darren Gass was kicking himself for letting his Subaru slide on to the grass twice during the stage which all cost time.
Garry Jennings seemed reasonably happy at stage finish and said. “We’re getting there”. Gary White is getting faster by the stage in his Subaru and is creeping up the leaderboard. Mark Doyle’s Celica remained firmly parked in the paddock and missed stage 3. Denis Biggerstaff’s Metro 6R4 was having clutch trouble and had to be pushed into service. Denis and his men are going to try and change the clutch between stages which sounds like a fairly tall order. Brian O’Mahony is another whose times are getting better for every stage as the Cork man gets more used to the park.
Pat O’Connell continues to lead group N but his Lancer was slightly damaged after stage 3, the front left corner showing contact marks with a chicane. Mark Massey was fastest GpN. Wesley Patterson was fastest Mk2 Escort from Adrian Hetherington. Wesley Patterson chose a softer tyre and was much happier with the turn in. Adrian Hetherington had his Escort’s manifold break just after the start leaving him down on power. James Kennedy who had been 2nd Mk2 dropped a few seconds with a spin and Declan Boyle spun once more. Frank Kelly had a good time and put it down to adopting a forestry style of driving. With 2 stages to go on Rally Finland Latvala in the Focus leads from Ogier (Citroen). Loeb is 3rd and Petter Solberg 4th. Solberg who is being co-driven by Chris Patterson, said. “The car is very good, no problem at all. But can’t close that small difference to works Citroens”.
