The above times are unofficial.

First on the road through the opening stage of this Pirelli International Rally was Keith Cronin in his Impreza and he reported that there was lots of loose gravel on top of the roads and he felt that he was clearing the way for the cars behind. He also felt the car a little wayward towards the end of the stage and it seemed at stage finish that a front right hand tyre had gone soft.

Next down the stage was Gwyndaf Evans in the white and black Evo 10 and he talked of serious dust hanging in the air and slowing his progress. As further cars arrived that was the recurring story that the dust was a bit of a nightmare, cutting the visibility right back.

The Icelandic driver Daniel Sigurdarson made the comment “Zero vision” whereupon a bystander said. “Nothing to do with Icelandic volcanic dust either!” David Bogie’s comment was. “I couldn’t see and I did not want to risk crashing”. At the same time both drivers both up very respectable times indeed. Adam Gould lost quite a few seconds when he spun his Impreza at a narrow section alongside the river towards the finish. Jason Pritchard dropped over a minute with a front right puncture on his Impreza.

In the R2 class PG Andersson was fastest with a time of 8.27.2 in his Fiesta. Matti Rantanen did 8.31.8. Jarkko Nikara had 8.32.7 – both in Twingos. Mark Donnelly should have been the first of the Citroen C2R2s through but he was delayed at stage start with a split water pipe. The first Citroen was Robert Barrable and his time was 9.06.1.
