At the front of the Historic category Ray Cunningham is driving a superb rally today and when his Mini reached service he told us. “We had a couple of big moments in stage 4 when the car snapped sideways under braking. But I was very committed over the gravel in stages 2 and 3, Roughty River and Sheen River, it went well. We have a small issue with the clutch but should get it sorted here”. Phillip Wylie went better in stage 4 than the previous 2 stages, he said that the smoother type of road through Liberty Hall suits his MGB better. Current Tarmac Historic Champion Niall Creighton has been dropping time to the cars in front and he said. “The car is first class. I have nothing to blame but myself”. We reported earlier that Ian Chadwick had lost a lot of time in stage 3. It appears that his Mini got caught out over a bump before a corner and went through a hedge. Adrian Randles/Sean Duggan retired their Modified Escort when the engine developed a bad noise. Owen Murphy slid his Avenger into a ditch on the 2nd stage and although there was no damage he was forced to retire. He had been bleeding the brakes and just got caught out when the rear wheels locked.

In the Post Historics Ed Murphy did lead but got a puncture in stage 3 and couldn’t get the wheel changed and dropped about 9m. Sean Lockyear in the Porsche now leads and the Yorkshireman is concentrating on keeping it smooth. Denis Moynihan, 2nd Post Historic, said. “I can’t go any harder. I can’t beat the Porsche. The stages are too dirty”. Ray Hilliard reckons he made a wrong tyre choice and also had some intercom problems. Ed Gibbons in the Avenger lost some time in stage 2 when he went off the road briefly, then caught a Mini in stage 3 and lost more time. His total is now 49.49. Kevin Flanagan is on 39.05 and he said. “We had a lovely run on Liberty Hall, the rust is going away!” Noel Hurley adjusted the clutch on his Saab and is now getting a clean gear change and is now 6th o/a. Jeremiah O’Flynn slid into a ditch on a long 6 left in stage 4. Frank O’Mahony told us. “I got out of Minis in 1979 so its taking me a small while to get used to it again!” Thomas O’Brien’s red Mini has been on 2 cylinders for most of the day but he is battling on.

CLASSICS: Diarmuid Lynch has lost about 20s with 2 spins and then the car cutting out but had a good run in SS4. Mark Falvey is keeping the pressure on but survived a close shave on SS3 and reckons he has a wrong time for SS4. Donie McCarthy in the blue Manta is having brake problems. Kevin Hickey in the Mexico had his engine cut out briefly in SS1.
In the MODIFIEDS Mike Quinn reported a few hairy moments. Barry Meade has had trouble with his Escort’s sequential gear change. At one point the car was stuck in 6th gear.
