In the Historic section Ray Cunningham was fastest from Phillip Wylie with James O’Mahony in the volvo 3rd quickest. Cunningham said at stage finish. “I felt a little rusty and didn’t commit early on in the stage so I have a bit of work to do. The car felt a bit jumpy more bumps than I thought”. For all that Ray was a lot quicker than any of the following drivers although Phillip Wylie overcame a big problem at the stage start to set a very good time in his MGB. The big problem at the start was a wire falling off the distributor and the engine would not run at all! Fortunately he found the problem and did not lose any road time. He also lost a couple of seconds catching and getting past a Mini in the stage. Mervyn Johnston said he felt very rusty indeed and his time was 8.53. Ian Chadw2ick overshot a junction in his Mini and lost a couple of seconds.

In the Post Historic section the fastest man was Ed Murphy and he reported a good clean run. Sean Lockyear in the Porsche was disappointed not to have been fastest. Martin Ward had to do the stage with no intercom and his co driver Linda said. “Never used my fingers so much!” Martin also told of a spin and clipping a rock. Edward Gibbons had a time of 8.24 in his 1600 Avenger and Owen Murphy, also in an Avenger, did a 8.36. Owen lost a couple of seconds getting past a Cortina. Noel Hurley in the Saab has grinding and graunching gears which he is hoping to get sorted here at service. Frank O’Mahony is seeded well down in his Mini Cooper and apart from catching and passing cars he also lost a couple of seconds checking that the occupants of 2 crashed Minis were OK. Mike O’Leary/Mike Moriarty were running with No.3 on their Mini Cooper but were moved from the Historics to the Post Historics. However, their rally ended on that opening stage when the Mini suffered a mechanical breakdown.
