For Denis Cronin winning this Fastnet Rally for the 2nd time was just as important to him as the first in 1994 in his yellow and white Ascona. For young Colman Hurley it is his maiden rally win, which is always very special. Melvyn Evans set fastest time on the final stage to score 2nd o/a with Niall Maguire 3rd and Patrick Elliott 4th. Elliott’s final position means that he retains his Dunlop National C/ship title along with his co-driver Paul Goodman. Kevin Barrett & Sean Mullally were 5th o/a in their Subaru, which is enough to bring Kevin into 3rd o/a in the championship behind Maguire. When Denis Cronin stepped out of his Subaru at the West Cork Hotel finish ramp he said. “Delighted more than anything that my confidence is back.” Second placed Melvyn Evans commented. “Very happy with that, great race with Maguire”. Niall Maguire said. “Very disappointed not to have won the championship. And to be pipped by 2s for 2nd place on the rally”. Patrick Elliott in 4th place commented on his back to back championship wins. “We had our work done at the start of the year, the last 2 rallies have been tough. We couldn’t afford any mistakes”.

Garry Jennings/David Moynihan in their Lancer win Group N today while Kevin Kelleher finished 2nd GpN today co driven by his brother Martin and he wins our Patterson RallyNews Award for top Group N in the Dunlop National series. Wesley Patterson/Martin McGarrity made a late charge in their Escort to finish best 2wd from Mike Quinn/Grainne McEnery in their similar Ford. Daragh O’Riordan/Jonathan McGrath round off the top 10 and they have won Class 6 in their Renault Clio S1600. Daragh did seem to be heading for 8th o/a but his stage 2 time has been amended which knocks him back a couple of places. Garry Jennings said. “Really enjoyed the rally towards the end. I didn’t like the stages at the start”. Kevin Kelleher said. “It was hard today mathematically just sitting behind Garry. Hard way to do the rally. However we kept our noses clean and it was a great reward for all the boys who work on the car voluntarily to win GpN on the championship”.

With one stage remaining Ray O’Sullivan/Derek O’Brien were leading the Junior category in their Nova from David Fleming/Kieran Doherty (Civic). In the Historic Rally Ed Murphy/Johnny Hickey led from Ray Hilliard/Senan Raggett, both crews in Mk1 Escorts. Finally for now well done to CoC Michael O’Riordan and his enthusiastic Skibbereen MC team for organising such an interesting and good event. Our thanks to all our sponsors of the RallyNews service, and thanks also to Angus Sealy for results and Dougie Hughes for RallyNews distribution.
