RALLY NEWS NO.4 Skibbereen Service/Sunday 1.15
UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 4 MAULTRAHANE

2nd (6) Melvyn Evans/Patrick Walsh (Impreza WRC) 41.20
3rd (3) Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Impreza WRC) 41.27
4th (2) Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman (Impreza WRC) 41.55
5th (4) Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally (Impreza WRC) 41.58
6th (9) Garry Jennings/David Moynihan (Lancer N) 42.28
7th (8) Kevin & Martin Kelleher (Lancer N) 42.42
8th (15) Daragh O'Riordan/Jonathan McGrath (Clio) 43.23

10th (10) Wesley Patterson/Martin McGarrity (Escort) 44.01

With many of the roads now drying out the going is getting a little easier for the drivers and Denis Cronin was 19s faster on his 2nd run through the Maultrahane stage. West Cork man Denis who won this rally in 1994 in his Ascona was 8s faster than Niall Maguire through stage 4 with Melvyn Evans a further 2s back. Patrick Elliott continues to play the waiting game and was content to be 4th fastest through the stage to maintain his 4th o/a and 2nd placed in the points. If the positions stay as they are that is more than enough for Patrick to retain his National title.

Garry Jennings was 6s faster than fellow Lancer driver Kevin Kelleher in the race for Group N honours. Kevin in the “The Big Fella” Lancer would dearly like to win GpN here today but in a situation akin to Elliott’s Kevin must use his head and just get the car to the finish so that he wins GpN on the National Championship and collects the Patterson RallyNews Award.

Looking back to stage 3 some of the class leaders included: Daragh O’Riordan who led class 6 in his Clio despite earlier brake overheating problems. It did appear that Brian O’Mahony would have given Daragh a run for his money in class 6, but Brian’s Clio was giving some gearbox troubles and he retired. Mike Quinn led cl.14 after SS3. Declan Gallagher has made the trip down from Donegal worth while as he leads class 11 in his Starlet. Following the retirement of Jim McKenna, whose similar Starlet developed a severe misfire, it looks as if Declan will win the class on the National series. John Stafford in his Darrian led class 9 and Martin Lordan led class 13 in his Escort. Stephen Carey led class 2 in his Civic. Eamonn McCafferty led class 5 in his Puma. Wesley Patterson was 7s faster than Mike Quinn through stage 4 so following a steady start P\atterson has speeded up as he gets used to the paddle change in his Escort and the gap between himself and Mike Quinn is down to 16s. Leonard Downey retired his Escort after stage 1 because of fuel pressure problems.
On Rally GB Sebastien Loeb has won and will retain his World Rally Champion crown.
