Niall Maguire and his co driver Enda Sherry brought their Subaru Impreza into the Ennis finish as very clear winners of this Clare Stages Rally. They finished over 2m ahead of Mike Quinn & Grainne McEnery with Ed O’Callaghan/Ger Clancy in a similar Escort 3rd despite a repeat of fuel pressure problems towards the end. Young Craig Breen and his co driver Gareth Roberts did a fantastic job to bring their 1600cc Fiesta into 4th o/a. Craig said. “This new car is definitely some machine”.

Trevor & Kenny Bustard won Group N and were 5th o/a in their Lancer, the brothers from Donegal tried out a new gearbox today and Trevor decided not to use the clutch at all over the last 3 stages and it seemed to work. Brian Brogan with Dermot McGettigan on the notes, 2 more Donegal men, brought their Escort into 6th o/a following a trouble free run.

A major last minute retirement was Anthony O’Halloran and his co driver Charlie McEnery. Their Lancer reportedly suffered a puncture that caused some problem with the throttle mechanism. David Percy’s Escort F2 did not complete the last stage following gearbox trouble. Raymond Conlan who was also in the top 10 has not made the finish either, his Corolla also having gearbox woes.

Niall Maguire commented at the finish. “We had a great run once we got the brakes on the car sorted. It is over a year since this car was out so it was good to get some miles done. It was a very enjoyable rally”. Maguire’s co driver Enda Sherry added. “And a very well organised rally”. Second placed Mike Quinn told us. “Not a bad day.”. His co driver Grainne McEnery, who celebrated her 28th birthday on Friday, remarked. “We are delighted it is just a pity my brother Charlie didn’t make it to the finish to celebrate as well”. Charlie was of course co driving for Anthony O’Halloran.
Finally for now our thanks and congratulations to Clerk of the Course Dermot Kelleher and all his hard working and enthusiastic Clare MC team for such a brilliant day’s rallying. Our thanks also to Angus Sealy (Results) and Dougie Hughes.
