Niall Maguire and his co driver Enda Sherry have really moved up a gear now their Subaru Impreza WRC fastest through all 3 stages on this middle loop. Even through the Dromore stage where Anthony O’Halloran previously had been fastest Niall was quickest this time. Anthony did give his Lancer’s clutch a bit of a scorching at the start of stage 5 and it slipped a little for a mile or so of the stage until it cooled down. In stage 6 O’Halloran reported no problems and Maguire was 1s faster. Mike Quinn had a great time through stage 5 but was well off O’Halloran’s pace through stage 6 so hasn’t managed to close the gap.

Trevor Bustard is still struggling a little with the new gearbox in his Lancer but did say that because the stages are so fast he is not having to use the lower gears so much which is taking a bit of the pressure off. Craig Breen continues to do a great job to hold on to 7th o/a and lead his class in his new Fiesta. Craig did report losing the car’s brakes slightly towards the end of stage 6, it was just a matter of them overheating. Ed O’Callaghan has got over his earlier fuel starvation troubles and his Escort is now very much on song, Ed was 2nd fastest overall through stage 5. Brian Brogan in 5th reported no problems.

We mentioned that Aidan Walsh had pulled out after stage 4, it transpired that the problem was simply a faulty plug lead. Raymond Conlan in the Corolla twin cam has been in the top 10 virtually from the word go but his Toyota gearbox is now starting to make horrible banging and crunching noises which doesn’t sound so good. David Percy’s Escort F2 is also in gearbox trouble, in his case 5th gear doesn’t want to engage at all. Neil Pierce was lying inside the top 30 after the first loop and reported all sorts of dramas as he had picked completely the wrong tyres. David Quigley/Des Sherlock are leading class 2 in their Civic despite having lost about 15s with a huge stage 4 overshoot. Anthony Collins/Donal Falvey are also having 3rd gear trouble with their Civic and are now in 49th place. John Morris/Declan Sylver are having misfiring problems with their white Escort Cosworth. Vincent O’Shea seems to have withdrawn his similar Escort Cosworth following misfire problems.
