The above times are from the first few cars on the road only and there could be a change to the leaderboard as more cars complete the stage.

Conditions for that opening stage just beyond Corrofin were absolutely beautiful and the drivers were revelling in the fast grippy surfaces. First on the road Niall Maguire is driving is S10 Impreza WRC and told us that the suspension seemed a little different from his usual S11 slightly softer and more pliable. Anthony O’Halloran brought his Lancer into the finish of that 13.8km Licken Lake test his reaction when asked if it had gone well was of the “OK” variety. Certainly Anthony was in at the deep end a little as his Lancer has been rebuilt from stem to stern with a new engine and gearbox, differential differential mapping and a new pump to provide the hydraulic power. He had virtually no time for resting before the rally so there could be a bit more to come especially when Anthony gets on to his home Ruan stage. Mike Quinn felt his Escort tyres were maybe a little soft in the compound department but seemed happy enough with his run.

Richard Casey/Brian McNamara were running with No.10 on their Escort but should have been 6th on the road and when we left the stage finish the news was that they had crashed off the road and were both OK. Gary Reidy/Paul Kelly were running at No.14 in their Escort and they also did not appear at stage finish. The news was that there was some mechanical problem with the car at the stage start. Hopefully they will get going.

Vincent O’Shea reported a misfire and no anti lag working on his Escort Cosworth. Vincent’s time was 8.13 while some other times included: Aidan Walsh 8.04: Tim Enright 8.10: Richard Burke in his Impreza 8.11: Peter Howley in the Starlet had a good run to record 8.00.
