Kevin Barrett was fastest through the 2nd stage but his Subaru sustained a rear left puncture on stage 3 when Kevin cut in too tight and although he only dropped perhaps 20-30s it has dented his charge for the front. Niall Maguire made no impression on the 2 group N cars at the front through stage 3, and Niall said that he was on too hard a compound tyre for the conditions. He felt that the tyres worked reasonably well on the wet roads but anywhere where there was standing water they were pretty useless. “No grip at all” was Niall’s comment. Garry Jennings was another making a real charge through stage 3 in his efforts to get ahead of Kevin Kelleher. Garry and Kevin were tying for the lead after stage 2. Garry however was slightly slowed at the end of stage 3 when his Lancer caught up with the puncture stricken Subaru of Barrett. As it was Kelleher set the fastest GpN time, 7m44s for the 12.45km stage. Kevin told us after the stage. “I’m shaking I was trying so hard”.

Behind the leading group Thomas Fitzmaurice holds 5th and is planning to change on to a softer compound tyre for the 2nd loop and also said. “I want to bring the Lancer home at the end”. Trevor Bustard was another to drop a couple of seconds through 2 and 3 and the Donegal man plans to go for a softer compound tyre. Mike Quinn was in more subdued form than usual when he brought his Escort into the service control. Mike was really struggling with the Escort in the slippy conditions. Jim McKenna is lying just outside the top 10 in his rear wheel drive Starlet, his total 26.10. Jim joked as he wiped the sweat from his face. “This Starlet comes with a steam room you know”. John Spain is down the order a bit of 27.13, he hasn’t been on a rally for a while and the Celica is a real handful today in these conditions. Tom Curley was 11th o/a after the opening stage but his Lancer reportedly hit a chicane/bale in stage 2 and then overheated so Tom has pulled in. Pat Kelly had a great run on stage 1 but he has stopped in stage 2 just after the village of Caherlisane.
