The lead of this Ulster Rally is seesawing between 3 drivers and now it is Derek McGarrity’s turn to lead from Gareth MacHale following the 2nd run over the Tardree stage. Tyre choice and dodging the rain showers are all part of the game. Derek McGarrity was fastest through that Tardree 2 on 5m20s for the 5.85 miles. Eugene Donnelly was 2nd fastest, 4s slower and Gareth MacHale was just 1s back from Eugene.

Gwyndaf Evans was fastest of the group N drivers with Keith Cronin still leading the category overall by 5s from Mark Higgins. Danny Barry had been 10th o/a and 5th GpN starting the stage but the Wicklow man has unfortunately crashed his Lancer out of the rally. Danny and co driver Martin Brady are reportedly OK.

Marty McCormack has got new brakes fitted to his Citroen C2R2 Max and he had 20s in hand over the Citroen of Jason Pritchard starting that stage with Andrew Hockridge 3rd, 20s back. Kris Hall led the Fiesta Sporting Trophy runners from Craig Breen. Craig made a cautious start in the damp conditions but is speeding up now.

Donegal man Joe McGonigle leads class 1 in his Honda Civic and he had a lucky escape when he pulled into a petrol station on the way into service and the bung fell out of the gearbox and all the oil started to run out. Joe’s co driver Isle of Mull girl Kim Baker has a slender hand and was able to replace the bung in behind the sump guard. Luke Pinder who was leading the Suzuki series starting the rally stopped on the first stage when his Swift ran wide on mud and a front wheel hit a tree stump and broke a drive shaft. Pinder will try to re-start in Super Rally in the morning. Richard Sykes meanwhile is the leading Suzuki from David Harrison. Euan Thorburn dropped almost 2m on the 2nd Tardree stage. Brian O’Mahony dropped a few seconds and Marty McCormack turned in a really good time, as did Adam Gould. Adam was just 1s down on Alastair Fisher. Dave Weston Jnr was another to lose time in Tardree and he dropped from 11th to 16th.
